“Productivity in 11 Words”:

One thing at a time, most important thing first, start now.

As I may have posted at times previously I love to eat. I love food. I have always been a bit of a bigger guy. Thankfully I have always had an interest in sports, fitness, and staying active. This has allowed me to always manage to stay just at the border of being in a “healthy weight range”.

This is a polite way of saying that I have a few extra pounds that I really need to shed. Okay more than a few. As I have always said I am not concerned so much about actual scale weight as I am about body fat percentage. If I am at 25% body fat right now I am clinically obese(or close to it). I would love to be in the mid teens.

I am 41 years old in 4 weeks. I need to start thinking about my future health. I want to able to do stuff for myself when I am 70, 80, and beyond if I am lucky enough to still be here at that time.

So what is the plan?

In my heart I know what I have to do. As the last post said Do What Needs To Be Done.

I need to cut out the junk. I need to follow a one ingredient diet. There are just too many chemicals in the foods I eat. No wonder I feel like crap.

This means absolutely no processed foods. No grains, no bread, no cereal, no milk, no cheese, no yogurt… Nothing that has to go through processing to reach my plate.

There is not one perfect diet for everybody. We are all different. There are people that thrive on high carbohydrate diets and people that thrive on high fat and high protein diets. The one common trend to an unhealthy diet is processing. I need to see what will happen if I cut out all processed foods from my diet.

First, we need to come to the realization that food “science” and marketing in recent decades has crowded all of the REAL food out of our grocery stores to the point that at LEAST 90% of everything in a modern-day grocery store is NOT true food anymore…

The so-called “food” that lines our grocery store shelves nowadays is better termed — “Edible Food-Like Substances”, as the highly respected nutrition journalist Michael Pollan calls it.

I absolutely love that term and think it is SO very true!

Our food supply has become so overly processed, that it’s not uncommon for a simple snack food to contain a list of 20-30 ingredients of additives, chemicals, flavorings, colorings, high fructose corn syrup, MSG, artificial sweeteners, and more.

I know this and yet I continue to eat garbage. When will I learn? When it’s too late? When I am sick? When I get cancer? It shouldn’t have to be that way.

I just want to feel better. I want to be healthier and more fit. More mentally alert. Less joint pain. All of this stems from my eating. I realize that some form of exercise is needed as well. But as I have said many times, you can’t out train a bad diet. No sense in exercising if you are going to eat crap.

If people just cut out refined stuff, ate real foods (animal proteins, vegetables, whole-food fats, natural starches), and paid attention to absolutely nothing else, they would improve their health profile and lose body fat. I think it would take them 70-80% of the way towards their goals.

So this is my minimalist lifestyle approach to eating. I think this every day and don’t follow through. Well no more excuses and no more bull shit for food.

  1. This post really hit on exactly what I’ve been thinking about this past week or so. I love good clean eating but sure haven’t been eating like that lately, quite the opposite and I’m really feeling it. I’m ready to take the plunge back to more healthy habits too. Let’s do it!

    1. Okay! I’m in! Today I had some oatmeal mixed right in with my egg whites and then made into an omelet. Had a little natural PB on it too. Bit of pineapple and canteloupe.Yum!
      Brown rice with a can of tuna and some broccoli.
      An apple.
      And another omelet as before.
      My worst time is at night of course. Man I go crazy sometimes so I have to curb that for sure. Let me know how you are doing!

I’ve been doing pretty good all week, lots and lots of fresh sauteed or roasted veggies, grilled chicken breast, fresh fish, oh and made some awesome lentil bean burgers, also made my favorite corn and black bean salsa. I did have pizza and a few beers last night but I don’t think that’s so bad in the grand scheme of things. Hope you are still doing well too!

      2. Pretty much the same for me. Lots of oatmeal. Fruit and some veggies. Had some chips and a few beers on the weekend and some frozen yogurt. YUM! Back on track this week. Being active and trying to examine my reasons for eating- ie boredom, out of habit, etc.

  2. I am starting the one ingredient diet on Sunday. I have been doing the Grapefruit diet for the past two weeks (which basically follows the one ingredient diet, but I was allowed to have one slice of dry toast twice a week…woo hoo!). My hope is that this will kick start my weight loss and then the one ingredient diet will help me to continue. I was an addict of Diet Coke…and now haven’t had so much as a sip in a week and a half. Wish me luck! And I hope you both are still doing well! 🙂
