Why Do We Have So Much Stuff

How much stuff do you have. If you are like most people the answer is A LOT.

We are marketed to 24 hours a day and it can be difficult to tune out those clever messages that are trying to get you to part with your money.

While we might want to get out from under the mountain of possessions we have, and have all the best intentions of simplifying our lives … the truth is that we continue to have too much stuff.

Part of that is laziness, an attitude of “I’ll get to it later” … but the real driving force behind having too much stuff is fear.

You are afraid of what other people think of you. It is a common human condition which is probably caused by the marketing people. They know how to play on your emotions.

You have a fear of not being good enough right now so you hold onto items that you do not use such as the elliptical machine you avoid or the guitar you don’t play.

You want these items to comfort you, to help you cope with fears and anxieties, to help you feel prepared and more secure, to help you feel that you will be OK, to feel more certain about the future. In a way it is also a way to feel more in control, when in reality the opposite is true.

The truth is that you are good enough right now. Don’t worry. I still struggle with this too! We are all a work in progress.

Minimalist Living- A Better Way

Being a minimalist is a state of mind, and not a set of rules. It can actually mean you have more of what you need, are able to enjoy everything you have and are not worried about what you don’t have.

All of that can help make living life a lot less stressful and can make it more fulfilling.

Living a minimalist lifestyle means you value yourself more than material things. It means making decisions based on what you need instead of getting everything you want. It does not mean the things you buy are cheap. It means they are something you need, regardless of how much they cost.

How you can benefit from minimalist living:

  • It enables you to focus. Having so much stuff tends to cause a persons thoughts to be all over the place. You worry about working enough to pay for all of the stuff and you spend your time trying to look for or put away all of the stuff in your home. When the stuff is gone and the bills of the home are lessened, it becomes possible to focus time and energy on the important things such as the people around you and the things you are doing.
  • Decluttering helps people breathe. When you begin to clear the clutter from the drawers, closets, attics, and garages, you are going to be opening up more space in your home. There will be more room to move around. More importantly, you will be letting go of things you were holding onto. It is as much a mental exercise as it is a physical one.
  • You have more energy. Without all of the clutter, all of the mental and physical energy that is spent dealing with it will be available for other activities. I really believe that people without the burden of a materialistic lifestyle are healthier and stronger as a result.

Everyone is different. You have to ask yourself if you really want to change the way things are with your life. If you want to Change The Code and reprogram what you believe to be important.
