You are getting frustrated. Every month you set goals, and every month it seems like you are coming up short in the same areas. Maybe you are not reading as much as you would like, or working out enough, practicing mindfulness, getting enough projects done, etc. You just cannot seem to find the time. But you feel like you are constantly busy, so where is all of your time going?

First of all let’s be honest. You probably have too much physical stuff around. It is hard if not impossible to get your life organized whn you have piles of clutter that are sucking the life from you. It is a mental drain and you need to deal with that. Check out How To Get Your House Decluttered This Weekend to get that part of this project underway.
One of the ways to organize your life so that you actually get things accomplished is to have a daily plan. Sounds simple, right? If you want to make a dent in your daily to-do list you need a plan of action.
Get Organized By Using Time Blocking
There is a way to get more done of what you want and need with less distraction, and it’s a strategy that you likely use for some things already. In order to get organized you have to schedule stuff. Not just the appointment-specific stuff, but all of the stuff that matters. You can do that by scheduling time blocks.
The thought of this may definitely be intimidating. I know what you are thinking. “I have to plan out every hour of my day?! What if something unexpected pops up? What if I mess up the schedule? Then I’ll be even more stressed out about everything!”
Relax. Breathe. Have a glass of wine. It will all be okay.
The one great equalizer that all of humanity has is time. No one has twenty-five hours in their day; we all have twenty-four. How we choose to use those hours is what separates us. By scheduling the stuff that matters (from the urgent to the crucial), you’ll be spending those hours far more wisely. In addition, you’ll be living your days proactively rather than reactively.
Yes You Should Schedule Everything
If you want to read more schedule a block of time to do it. Need to concentrate on your yoga practice? Time block it. Need to nap? Pencil it in. And so on. Scheduling is not just for work related activities anymore. You are looking at changing your programming remember? We are looking at making this your best year ever. That means you are going to have to do things differently.
Time Blocking is ridiculously effective in order to organize your life. You have something scheduled and blocked off and you will stick to that plan.
Have you ever started a task then halfway through it, thought of something else and started Task 2, only to leave Task 1 partially completed? Most of us have had this happen. But now if you are doing the dishes and remember that you have to call and schedule a doctor’s appointment, you have it written down for later in the day, so you know it will be taken care of then. You can complete the task at hand without interruption. Yes it is that easy to organize your life.
Now I know that a lot of people will try to use an app or computer program to help use time blocking to organize your life and if it works for you go with it. Personally I like a whiteboard calendar combined with a daily planner. A good old-fashioned paper system. Not only will the blocked times become part of the flow of your week, but you’ll actually discover how crucial these items you’re blocking out time for are. You’ll also be able to figure out how much time you really need, whether or not that time or day works for you and much more.
Get Your Life Organized Now To Start Getting Stuff Done
Ultimately it is up to you if you want to stop spinning your wheels and actually get organized.
Start with decluttering your space. Try these 5 minute declutterng tips. Take a long, hard look at what it is that is actually important to you in your life. There are so many benefits to living a more minimalist lifestyle.
And then implement Time Blocking to really get your life organized. It is all about working smarter not harder. Certainly everyone’s brains work differently and an organizational system that works well for one person may be a disaster for someone else. If you haven’t tried time blocking yet, though, I would encourage you to give it a try and see if you feel more organized and productive.
