The past month or more has been a bit of a struggle for some reason.

I have lost all sense of joy and happiness. I am not exactly sure what the reason for this may be. I am sure it is a combination of things.

Has this ever happened to you? A period where everything just felt like a bit of a struggle? A time where you felt empty? Like there was not much at all to look forward to?

What is especially strange is the it is Autumn here on the east coast of Canada and the weather is glorious. Warm days with lots of sun and cool, clear nights.

So What to Do When These Periods Happen

I dare say that a lot of people go through theses times when they feel especially down. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason for it. It is disheartening to say the least.

But you have to somehow soldier on. It really is all about you during these times.

There are countless blog posts, articles, and books to look at for advice. Sometimes friends can be a resource but to be honest they do not really understand what it is that you are going through.

For me to pull myself up and get out of this borderline depressive state I need to get back to the basics of simplicity and living intentionally.

Living Simply

The world is just a mess. And while the goings on in the world may tend to bother you on a deeper level it does not serve you to dwell on it. All you can focus on is you and your little slice of the planet.

  • Go a day without social media
  • Go a day without your phone
  • Be sure to do some sort of activity like a walk
  • Drink lots of water
  • Reduce coffee consumption
  • Do not spend any money for a day(or more- 14$ a day adds up to 400$ a month)
  • Get rid of unwanted/unneeded items around your place
  • Read
  • Sit quietly for at least 5 minutes
  • Watch something that makes you laugh
  • Do something nice for someone

How To Live an Intentional Life

Living with intention. You do not want to just drift through with no idea of what the hell is going on. You want to live on purpose. You want to live with purpose.

Living a simple life certainly requires intentionality. In a world that is hectic, busy, and hurried, simplicity is not. In a culture that encourages selfishness and excess, minimalism does not. And in a society that is rushing to gain more, satisfaction with less is counter-cultural.

I encourage you to choose your own path. Not the path that someone else expects you to follow.

I encourage you to wake up each day and choose your own attitude. Live in the now. Any past decisions that have been made are gone. Over. Done with. Every day is a new opportunity to live life on your terms. You simply have to choose to do so.

  • Stop comparing yourself to others
  • Write a personal mission statement
  • Define your core values
  • Express gratitude for all that you have
  • Stay focused on what you want your life to be
  • Focus on single-tasking(multi-tasking is a myth)
  • Use the power of mindful meditation


It is the small daily actions that add up to your life. So the question is what do you want your life to be? How do you want your life to look?

You can design a life of less—and more. More of what you love, less of what you don’t. It’s a process, and we’re all in it together.
